Cacheu, Slave Path

Inaugurated in 2016, the memorial dedicated to the slave trade is located in the Cacheu fort. The building where today it is possible to see the artefacts that marked this time in our history was recovered by the initiative of the national association Acção para o Desenvolvimento, with international support.

The aim of the museum is to tell part of the history of our ancestors who, more than 500 years ago, left our coast as "merchandise men". The museum building is next to the Cacheu River. Our proposal is:

  • 7:00 am: Departure from Bissau for a trip of approximately 2.5 hours to the city of Cacheu. On the way, we will cross the Amílcar Cabral bridge, along roads decorated with mangroves and several tabancas in the north of the country;
  • 9:30 am: Arrival, you will be welcomed by the Slavery Memorial guide. We provide a refreshing drink before starting the visit to the museum and Forte de Cacheu;
  • 10 am: Beginning of the guided tour of the Slavery and Trafficking Negreiro Museum. After visiting the museum, you have the opportunity to stroll through the Cacheu fort and enjoy the magnificent landscapes of the south bank of the Cacheu river.
  • 12:30 pm: Short walk through the city of Cacheu followed by lunch served along the banks of the river.
  • 16h00: Return to Bissau.
