Parque Nacional Marinho João Vieira e Poilão
The Marine Park of João Vieira and Poilão is situated in the southwestern part of the Bijagós Archipelago. The park was created in August 2000 by IBAP, covers an area of 49,500 hectares and contains 4 main islands (João Vieira, Cavalo, Meio and Poilão) and three islets.
The islands of the park have a humid forest cover with palm trees ... are essentially used for rice cultivation, palm harvesting, palm wine (not leaving our land without experimenting) and religious ceremonies.
When you visit the park you will have the opportunity to see three species of sea turtles, the green turtle (Chelonia mydas), the turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) and the turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea).
The beaches of Poilão Island are the most important spawning spot in the entire Eastern Atlantic for green turtles. A boat trip on the sea that surrounds the islands of the park will provide you with encounters with diverse marine mammals, such as the dolphins Sousa teuszil and Tursiops iruncatus. One of the park's charismatic species is the gray parrot, you might get lucky and spot one.
To visit the park contact the IBAP or request information at the hotel where I will be staying in the Bijagós Archipelago.
